Rollin’. Rollin’. Rollin’ down…your face?!

This week I thought I would discuss a technique that I have been delving into for the past 8-9 months – Derma-Rolling. This technique, in the simplest of terms, involves using a device to roll tiny needles on your face. Yes…you read that right! Needles. On. Your. Face.

Now bear with me, it is not as scary as it sounds and there really are SO many great benefits to derma-rolling. Here is the lowdown on the hot new trend of derma-rolling:

A derma-roller is a handheld device that has a small roller that is covered in hundreds of tiny needles. When you roll the derma-roller over your skin, you are essentially creating tiny little pricks and this tricks your body into producing collagen and elastin to help heal these micro mini wounds. The result? Your skin will will be tighter and much more plump. This technique is amazing for reducing the signs of aging and to help get rid of discolouration (i.e. pesky under eye circles, acne scars, age spots, etc.)

How to Use Derma-Roller

You want to ensure that you use a small needle size. I went with a 0.5mm as going any thicker could potentially cause damage to the skin.
Here is the Derma-Roller I used: Derma Roller

There is a bonus when derma-rolling is used in conjunction with a serum. The technique of derma-rolling allows your serum to sink even deeper into the skin. This means you are reaping even more benefits from your serum! My favourite serum is Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil 1.7oz (50ml)

You should always start with freshly cleaned skin. For maximum benefit, apply serum to your skin before AND after rolling. Gently begin rolling the derma-roller over your skin and make sure to keep switching directions. Go vertically, horizontally and diagonally! It doesn’t hurt to go over the same area twice. If you decide to roll under your eyes to combat under eye bags, be very gentle!

As for how often you should derma-roll, I try to derma-roll once a week but it completely depends on what you are trying to achieve. Some find that they only need to derma-roll once a month. On the other hand, some people who are trying to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, will derma-roll a few times per week.

Also, when it comes to taking care of your derma-roller, always ensure to clean and sanitize with rubbing alcohol after each use and store in plastic container (mine came with a custom case).

This technique is very simple and super affordable! Also, who doesn’t love the fact that you can get amazing skin in the comfort of your own home?!

Have you tried derma-rolling? Let me know if you have or if you are interested in trying out this handy little device!
