For as long as I can remember, I have always had an addiction to nail polish and having the perfect mani! My choice in polish colour varies depending on the season, trends, my mood, etc. Sometimes, I will see someone with a certain colour on their nails and I immediately want to wear that colour too!
Just like fashion and makeup, nails can be an expression of yourself! Choosing a bright pink may make you feel happy and girly while choosing something like slate grey or even black may make you feel like a bossbabe and bada**! It is so much fun to experiment with different nail colours and the possibilities are endless! If I have an event coming up, sometimes I will choose my nail colour depending on what I am wearing as it is an extension of my overall “look”.
I have put my nails through the ringer before with artificial nails and have paid the price! I have been getting shellac manicures for over a year now and am in LOVE! There are no chips and the colour can last for 2 whole weeks! I found that when I would paint my own nails, the colour would barely last a day! The other bonus with shellac manicures is that my nails have been getting SOOO long! I have never been able to grow my nails out as they were always too brittle!
Shellac Manicure: Shellac manicures is a process that essentially means half nail polish, half gel. It is applied like regular nail polish but cured under a UV light just like gel nails.
The not-so-fun part of shellac manicures is the removal process. It is more time consuming than regular nail polish. You need to soak your nails in acetone for at least 10 minutes. However, as I get my nails done at a salon, they always do this part for me! And whatever you do, fight the urge of picking them off! This will only result in you peeling your nails!
As for my nail shape, I tend to keep mine more ‘squoval’. For me, this shape compliments my hands the best and looks the most natural but at the same time well-groomed. Not every shape will flatter everyone’s tips. Here are the different shapes for nails:
To find your shape, it’s best to follow your ‘smile line’ – this is the area where the nail bed and white tip meet. If it’s very round, it’s best to keep a very oval shape. If the smile line is not very rounded, it’s best to go with a more square or ‘squoval’ shape.
How to Keep Nails Healthy
Yes, having your nails painted a fun colour can make your nails and hands look better, but there is so much more that you can do to ensure that your nails and hands are healthy and always look their best!
- Moisturize constantly, especially your cuticles.
- Always file your nails in one direction and always file dry nails.
- Always wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning your house using harsh chemicals.
- Eat a well balanced diet, healthy nails start from within.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Do not bite your nails! (my BIGGEST pet peeve).
- Try taking a biotin supplement (helps make your hair strong too!)
- Try rubbing olive oil or coconut oil around your cuticles at night and wear cotton gloves to sleep – your cuticles will thank you!
I need to get a manicure next week – any suggestions?!
