To prime or not to prime?
This past weekend, the team at Pro Makeup Coach had the pleasure of doing the makeup for the models in Kingston’s Bridal Show. Check out some of our stunning models:
A couple of the models asked me about primers and which ones were my favourite. I have heard many people say that they don’t use primers and it literally makes me cringe.
If you are not using a primer for your makeup application, then you definitely need to keep on reading to learn why this product is a necessity for any makeup application!
What is a Primer?
When you hear the word primer, what do you think of? Primarily, you would think of a primer that you would use when painting your house.
Well primers for your face are used for essentially the same reasons. A primer is used to smooth out your skin and fill any bumps or uneven texture so that your makeup will apply evenly and last longer.
Different Types of Primers
One of the many issues people seem to have is that they use a primer but their makeup still does not seem to last all day. It could be that the primer and foundation they are using simply do not mix.
There are different formulations of primers: silicone-based or water-based. A silicone-based primer will have words that end in ‘cone’ or have ‘sili’ listed in the ingredients. The basic rule of thumb is that water-based primers work best with water-based foundations and silicone-based primers work best with silicone-based foundations.
The beauty world has started to create multi-use priming products! You can now purchase moisturizers that also act as a primer for makeup, primers that have anti-acne treatments and a multitude of colour-correcting primers! There are even primers for your eyelids, lashes and lips!
Here are my holy grail primers for your eyelids, lashes and lips are as follows:
1. Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion
Primers for your eye lids are used to prevent your eye shadow from creasing.
2. Diorshow Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer
Primer your lashes keeps mascara from flaking (certain lash primers can also elongate lashes!)
3. Bite Line and Define Lip Primer
Primers for lips are used to smooth lips before colour application and helps the longevity of your lip colour!
When choosing a primer, determine what type of skin you have and what you are trying to achieve in your makeup look.
