Hello my beauties! It is absolutely dreadful outside, BUT why not cozy up and read the latest blogpost from Y. Beauty? (And trust me, it’s a good one!)
Today, I am talking all about collagen powder. I have been seeing articles and posts about this protein everywhere lately and decided to try it for myself. I have been adding collagen powder to my morning coffee for just over a month now and I have to say, I am noticing some positive changes! My hair just seems to be healthier, my nails are growing like crazy and my skin just looks fresh!
What is Collagen?
One third of your body is made up of collagen. Collagen is a protein is what makes our skin look youthful and plump and when skin is damaged, collagen is what helps repair the skin. This is because collagen is made up of amino acids which are essentially the building blocks of the body. Collagen is found in the body’s connective tissue (i.e. ligaments, cartilage, bones, etc.) Did you know that your body’s natural collagen production slows at a rate of about 1% per year starting at age 20? This is why as you get older, your skin starts to wrinkle and you may find that you have joint problems such as arthritis.
There are three types of collagen – I, II and III. Type I is the most common and consists of strong fibers and is found in the skin, ligaments, bones (including the dentin of your teeth). Type II is the main type in cartilage and is likely the type of collagen that is lacking in your system if you find you are having joint pain. Type III is what makes up tissues in your muscles, intestines and blood vessels. All three types are vital for the health of your body.
Benefits of Collagen
So what are the benefits of taking a collagen supplements?
Improves skin elasticity
Reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks
Longer and stronger hair and nails
Reduce joint pain
Alleviate issues with indigestion (i.e. acid reflux, IBS and leaky gut syndrome)
Helps keep your heart healthy (reduces hardening of arteries)
Increase metabolism and aid in muscle growth
Reduce anxiety and improve brain function
Regulate blood sugar
My reaction was something similar to this:
Basically, collagen is the superhero of supplements!
I have been taking the Organika Enhanced Collagen Protein Powder and adding a tablespoon to my morning coffee. For 1 tablespoon of this powder, there is 8g of protein! I honestly haven’t noticed a change in the way my coffee tastes since adding in the collagen powder and it dissolves really well.
As I mentioned previously, my hair, skin and nails have all improved since I started taking the collagen supplement. Also, I tend to problems with digestion and noticed that I haven’t had many issues since I started taking this supplement. Another bonus is that I often get back pain from my scoliosis that I had surgery on when I was 14 (especially when the weather is bad, like it is now with the rainageddon), but my back hasn’t been bothering me much lately.
Seriously, if you are looking to take a supplement that literally can help improve your hair right down to your acid reflux, collagen powder may be just what you are looking for!
